Ms. Fay Farrell graduated from St. Louis University in 1950, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She immediately began her career as a registered nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital in St. Louis. For the next four decades at St. Mary’s her skills and influence continued to expand. Toward the latter half of her career, she developed the first infection control department at St. Mary’s. As the years passed, her knowledge of infection control grew. At age 60, after her retirement from St. Mary’s, she and two
nursing colleagues formed Infection Control, Inc., a consulting firm focused on implementing infection control policies in facilities providing care to older adults. Throughout her career, she never stopped learning, and she never stopped striving to be the best health care provider she could be. She was often referred to as “The Bug Lady,” at St. Mary’s because of her knowledge of infectious diseases. Her passion for community health, infectious disease, and geriatric care was an inspiration to her healthcare partners, nursing colleagues, and loved ones. This scholarship was established in her memory.
