Carruth J. Wagner MD Foundation Scholarship Awards for Internships in Public Health

This scholarship benefits a College of Public Health and Social Justice MPH graduate student in good academic standing (GPA of at least 3.0 is required) who must complete an internship as part of their academic curriculum and who is not paid by the organization. The MPH Applied Practice Experience agreement must be signed and approved by the internship instructor and preceptor to be eligible. The internship must be completed in community-based setting. Or, if working with a University-affiliated setting, the work must be primarily focused on community engagement, typically with external partners. The internship should allow students the opportunity to address a critical public health issue in the community and should not be primarily administrative or research in nature. Only students beginning their internship in Summer 2024 are eligible to apply. Financial need may be considered. Funds will be distributed in Summer 2024.
Students receiving funding from the Maternal and Child Health Center of Excellence will not be eligible to receive this scholarship.

  2. Upload completed MPH Internship Agreement. The agreement must be signed by all parties and must indicate the internship is unpaid.
  3. Provide an essay (no more than 300 words) that describes your career goals in public health, the ways in which the internship would help you move toward those goals, and fulfill the mission of the organization. To be eligible, this internship must be approved by your internship coordinator and occur in a community-based organization that focuses on improving the the health of the community, eliminating health disparities, and/or improving access to health care. For the purpose of this award, we define community-based organization as an organization, agency or group that works closely with its community and/or its representatives so that its work directly benefits the community it serves.
