*This is for the 2023-2024 academic year. *This scholarship is awarded to support the retention of undergraduate English majors who are in need. It is open to historically underrepresented students and to first-generation college students. One nonrenewable tuition scholarship of $4000 is awarded each year. Eligible applicants must be an undergraduate student with a declared English major who demonstrate financial need and identify as a first generation college student or a member of a historically underrepresented group.

The scholarship is made possible by a gift from Abbot G. Spaulding, M.D., who graduated cum laude from SLU in 1955 with a major in English and minors in Philosophy and Chemistry. After attending SLU School of Medicine as well as Harvard, he became a practicing ophthalmologist in Cincinnati.
